Georgina Bannet

After four years away from surfing because of college, George has been back in the water for about one month now. She first tried surfing when she was 15 as her house was close to Sanur Beach and she would also surf at Padang Galak Beach, well known for its strong current. She usually surfs with her friends who live nearby. Unfortunately she has to go back to Australia soon to continue her studies at the University of Sydney in the law faculty. She hasn’t been surfing in Australia as she needs to focus her time on her studies. She is currently working at Surfer Girl as the marketing manager, a job she loves because her coworkers are solid and she can still go surfing. George is also an animal lover and she has 3 dogs that often go to the beach with her. She told us about a bad experience she once had while surfing at Lembongan, she wiped out and scraped her arm on the fire coral. “My arm felt like it was on fire. Hot and painful combined” In spite of that she still loves surfing at Lembongan because the beach is so clean. George, who is mixed English/Hong-Kong, loves surfing as a hobby and hopes to keep improving her surfing. She hopes her life will be like summer. Bright, happy and successful.

Magic Wave Surfing Competition

Magic Wave Surfing Championship is a monthly contest organized by Magic Wave to get the Kuta teenagers together, especially the surfers, to be part of the committee. I Gede Ananda is a young surfer who has already achieved a lot. The shadow of his
father, legend surfer Ketut Menda, is difficult to separate from this young man known as Nanda, but Nanda has proved himself in his role as Contest Director at MSC.

Setting contest dates, designing flyers, banners, backdrops and T shirts for the contest, choosing and organizing the judges, controlling the contest timing and running the contest program are not easy tasks but his manner and experience with surfing make his work easier. “Because I have been around surfers since I was small it’s not too hard to find judges” he explained. There are more than a few obstacles to overcome such as being late and getting the equipment ready. “It would be ideal to get everything ready the day before but we have to do it a few hours before the contest starts and sometimes we run late” explained Nanda, who also likes photography.

Nanada agrees that apart from the aim of the MSC to develop the ability of the under 14 surfers and give them competition experience, the MSC also hopes to show teenagers, especially those from Kuta, how to organize contests. So far only a few have been interested. “Maybe because of a lack of experience, or they feel inadequate or shy because they under-value what it takes to run a contest. Running a contest is a way to develop surfing in Indonesia.” he said. Nanda also hopes that the government will pay more attention to such activities and provide some support, not only in issuing permits but also some financial support because these contests give the young Kuta guys contest experience and also promote surfing in Indonesia, particularly Bali, to the world.
